Instrumentation Group
The Sensors & Instrumentation KTN is the UK’s sensing network. It was created by the DTI in recognition of the strategic importance of sensing to the UK economy.
The Sensors & Instrumentation KTN team is actively working to broker partnerships and collaborative R&D projects through a range of Instrumentation Group in a range of technology and application areas.
The Instrumentation Group is supporting, and stimulating innovation in the advanced instrumentation sector by encouraging enhanced linkages throughout the supply chain, and between research organisations and industry.
By ‘advanced’ instrumentation we are generally referring to the higher value, lower volume part of the instrumentation market, and to systems-level instrumentation issues rather than component technologies. Examples of systems-level issues include active and adaptive optics, autonomous systems, large & small scale online metrology and formation flying of satellite based scientific instruments.
Advanced instrumentation is an important sector. It directly accounts for approximately £9 billion of business for the UK economy; and indirectly it underpins an additional £50 billion in other sectors incl. Healthcare, Life Sciences, Defence, and Aerospace. However, many of the UK-based companies manufacturing instrumentation are within multinational organisations and the market is highly fragmented.
The AISIG will create a greater feeling of a combined instrumentation sector within the UK, and stimulate UK companies into developing innovative technologies and competing on the world stage.
Further information on this special interest group is available in the PDF entitled ‘AISIG’ ( 426KB).
