Qi3, the technology commercialisation specialists, can help academics benefit from the Research Councils Follow-on Fund by providing technology and market evaluation expertise.
The Follow-on Fund aims to increase the level, and accelerate the rate, of commercialisation of research ideas arising from the research community. It will provide funding to support activities essential to securing commercial opportunities (e.g. licensing, seed or venture finance).
The fund will support further scientific, technical and intellectual property development, as well as market research activities, and the investigation of potential licensees and joint ventures.
Following a successful pilot call the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and the Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council (PPARC) have announced the second call for proposals. The closing date for this second call is the 17th February 2005.
The fund is open to researchers from any of the above four Research Council communities, and grants will be awarded up to a maximum of £60K over 12 months.

One of the popular services Qi3 provides to both our public and private sector clients is Technology and Market Evaluations. This is where we undertake evaluations of technologies to determine their potential commercial value and to recommend exploitation strategies. This service, along with our experience in building successful joint ventures, and negotiating license deals, is ideally suited to provide the market research and commercial exploitation activities funded by the Research Councils Follow-on Fund.
Qi3 is a sales, marketing and business development company supporting technology companies, enterprises, government, and research organisations. We have extensive skills and experience in sales and marketing, as well as broad credentials in physical sciences, engineering, and healthcare – indeed we are “scientists with business know-how”.
Our clients in the public sector include PPARC (The Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council) and CERN (The European Particle Physics Laboratory). Our work for these clients is based on technology translation, a fashionable term for the activity that enables public sector technologies to be “transferred” into the private sector. Our aim is to build the best commercial route to market for these technologies either through licensing, spinout creation or through collaborative development with existing companies.
In the public sector we work with a wide range of start-ups, small, and medium sized companies, helping them manage and create commercial success. We also undertake work for a range of large corporations who are looking to create new business from in-house technology strengths or manage market change.
