Case 3 - Business development for CamFPD
The issue
A university spin-out company has won a SMART Feasibility Award for the investigation
of the technical and market feasibility of a potential product. But what is
the potential market? Who are the competitors? How should the product be sold,
to whom and at what price?
Our input
We assessed the feasibility of entering
the market anticipated by the company.
In fact, there was limited chance
of success in the selected market.
Nevertheless, our investigation
discovered that, with revised specifications,
a much larger market could be accessed
with a reasonable chance of success.
This has led to further development,
extending the prototype to meet
the needs of the new markets.
A tip
The Department of Trade and Industry
(DTI) Grant
for R&D is an excellent
means of providing funding for
development of a technology product
and associated market studies.
