As an associate, worked with Qi3 on several private sector consultancy projects.Now working mainly for public sector clients a part of the Sensors and Instrumentation KTN, and F6 ERID-watch projects.  Located in the Oxford area, this gives Qi3 a presence in the Oxford Science hub.
1998-present Founder
Technology Enterprise

Technology and Business consultancy, working for commercial customers in product innovation, prototype development, project management, technology due diligence, IP management and troubleshooting.Major clients include The National Gallery, Stratophase, The British Museum and Tissuomics.  Also worked as Systems Engineer on the bHROS spectrometer now installed on Gemini South, in addition being the design authority on cryogenics, detectors and mounting systems.
1998-2000 Director
Maran & CoIntellectual Property services
Mainly in assisting selected inventors in leveraging IP, raising finance and providing interim management.  Also worked with public sector organisations (RSRE and DSTL) in rationalising their patent portfolios.
1992-1998 Engineering Director
Oxford Instruments PLC, Research Instruments Division

Responsible for a team of 80 PhD-qualified engineers and design draughtspersons, designing £20m+ of product per annum.  Implemented structural change to reflect the changing nature of the business environment, leading to a doubling in engineering productivity and profit.  Was responsible for a major IT investment programme, managing a transition to ISO9001 registration, and led Y2K team.Personally led a number of high profile projects in mineral separation, cryogenic tunnelling microscopy and the application of superconducting gradiometry for the GOCE mission.
1991-1992 Technical Director
Wharfedale PLC
Led the R&D team and also undertook technology due diligence for acquisitions.  Supported City presentations to raise money in a Placing and Open Offer.  Merged the acquired and established technical teams which produced 28 new audio products for launch in late 1991
1986-1991 Director of Innovation

Followed the founder of PA Technology, Professor Gordon Edge CBE, as a founding member of this Cambridge-based technology consultancy.  Clients included Esselte, Wharfedale, Domino Printing, Oxford Instruments and the DTI
1982-1986 Physicist in the applied physics group, later to became Senior Consultant
PA Technology

Responsible for developing a wide range of technologies, particularly those involving multi-disciplinary activities.  Major clients included Kodak, Pharmacia Biosensor, Lego/Modulex, Shell Ventures, British Aerospace, IBM and the DTI.
1981-1982 Principal Engineer
Smith Associates
Undertook electronics development and system analysis mainly for defence applications, including the development of microprocessor driven systems for multi-channel data acquisition and display.
 
Education 
1977-1981 PhD Laser Physics.  Development of a High Power Single-Mode Laser for Non-Linear Optics Applications.
Southampton University

Later commercialised for scientific and industrial applications by JK Lasers and Spectron Laser systems.  Now included in all standard texts on lasers.
